Witnessing a cardiac arrest in a public place can be a frightening experience, but your quick actions could save someone’s life. Cardiac arrest is when the heart stops very suddenly, and every second counts. Knowing what to do can make the difference between life and death.

With multiple locations across Arizona and daily class availability, LBW offers a convenient, engaging, and low-stress learning environment that has been trusted since 1999.

Recognize the Signs

Cardiac arrest often happens without warning. A person may suddenly collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing or gasp irregularly. Unlike a heart attack, cardiac arrest causes the heart to stop completely, which means immediate action is critical.

Call 911 Immediately

If someone collapses and appears unresponsive, call 911 immediately or have someone else do so. Provide clear details about your location and what’s happening. The dispatcher may also guide you through CPR steps over the phone.

Start Hands-Only CPR

If the person is not breathing or only gasping, begin hands-only CPR:

  • Place the heel of your hand on the center of the chest, then place your other hand on top.
  • Push hard and fast—at least 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
  • Don’t stop until emergency help arrives or someone else takes over.

Use an AED if Available

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can help restart the heart. Many public places, such as malls, gyms, and airports, have AEDs. Turn it on and follow the instructions. The device will analyze the person’s heart rhythm and advise if a shock is needed.

Stay Calm and Reassure Others

While performing CPR or using an AED, try to remain calm and focused. If there are bystanders, ask for help locating an AED or directing emergency personnel to your location.
