If you need Basic Life Support certification for work or school, the hands-on skills check can feel like the most intimidating part of the process. What will you be asked to demonstrate, and how do you know if you are doing each step correctly? Knowing what to expect helps you feel more prepared and confident walking into your BLS skills check.
LBW Training Center has provided education in Arizona since 1999 and is an authorized American Heart Association (AHA) training center for BLS, CPR, ACLS, and PALS. Founded by Lynn Browne-Wagner, RN, MSN, LBW is known for experienced instructors, user-friendly courses, and a low-stress learning environment that makes hands-on training comfortable and effective.
What Is a BLS Skills Check?
A BLS skills check is the hands-on portion of Basic Life Support training. It lets you demonstrate that you can perform essential lifesaving skills correctly, rather than just understanding them in theory.
Depending on the course format, you may complete online coursework before attending an in-person skills session. During the skills check, an instructor evaluates your technique and helps correct any areas that need improvement.
Which Skills Will You Demonstrate?
During your BLS skills check, you may be asked to demonstrate skills such as:
- Performing high-quality adult CPR
- Performing CPR on children and infants
- Using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Providing effective rescue breaths
- Responding to choking
- Working as part of a two-rescuer team
- Switching compressors efficiently during team CPR
Your instructor will watch for compression depth, rate, hand placement, chest recoil, and ventilation technique.
Is a BLS Skills Check Difficult?
The skills check confirms that you can perform BLS techniques safely and effectively, not to make the process unnecessarily stressful. Instructors can provide guidance and feedback so you understand how to improve your technique.
Practicing the course material beforehand and paying close attention during demonstrations can make the process much easier. LBW Training Center also uses clean, modern equipment to support realistic hands-on practice.
