Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need certification to perform CPR?
No, you do not need certification to perform CPR in an emergency. If someone's life is at risk, taking action immediately can make a critical difference. However, formal CPR training and certification provide hands-on practice and the confidence needed to respond quickly and correctly.
How long does a CPR certification last?
Most CPR certifications, including those issued by the American Heart Association, are valid for two years. After that, you will need to complete a renewal course to maintain your certification and stay up to date with the latest guidelines.
How do I know if someone needs CPR?
A person may need CPR if they collapse, are unresponsive, are not breathing, or are only gasping for air. In these situations, immediate CPR and calling for emergency assistance are critical.
What should I do before starting CPR?
First, check the scene for safety, then check if the person is responsive and breathing. If they are unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 911 (or have someone else call) and begin CPR.
When should I call 911 during an emergency?
You should call 911 as soon as you recognize a serious emergency, such as someone being unresponsive, not breathing, choking, or experiencing severe injury or illness. If others are nearby, have someone call while you begin helping the person.
What should I do if I am afraid of doing CPR incorrectly?
It is normal to feel nervous, but taking action is usually better than doing nothing. CPR training helps build confidence so you can respond effectively, and emergency dispatchers can guide you through the steps if needed.
Is it better to try CPR or wait for emergency responders?
It is better to start CPR right away. Immediate CPR can help keep blood and oxygen flowing until emergency medical professionals arrive.
